I am a 32 year old female who was diagnosed with E. coli during her early 20’s. We were told to use Flagyl as a UTI treatment after a couple of weeks of taking this. I was concerned that it might be a bad thing for my gut. I have been on Flagyl for about a year now, but I am just not sure of the right dosage. I was prescribed an oral tablet of 200mg of Flagyl for the UTI, but I am having trouble finding a proper dose. I am still curious as I have read that Flagyl is an antibiotic but I just want to know if the medication works. Is it safe to use Flagyl for the UTI? Or will I have to take another medication? If so, I would love to hear about it from someone who has used Flagyl and has heard similar stories of side effects. Thanks for any help!
March 23, 2005, 10:14am1Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone could share their experience with the use of Flagyl. My gut infection was due to E. coli. I was prescribed Flagyl for UTI but I was not sure if it would be good for the gut as I started taking it. I think Flagyl is an antibiotic and is the one I would use for a UTI. Is there a better medication that would be good for me? I am currently on the Flagyl 400mg and have been feeling much better. Thank you!
I have heard that Flagyl is good for the gut as well. I know it is good for the gut but it also works for the gut as well. I am also on 500mg of Flagyl which I feel will be good for my gut and it is also a good way to get rid of this infection. I am also taking 500mg of Azithromycin but that does not work for me. I am looking into this and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks so much for all this info!
I was prescribed the oral tablet of 200mg of Flagyl for UTI. I was given it for the UTI and was not sure if it would work for the gut. I was also put on 500mg of Azithromycin for the UTI and then prescribed it for the GI tract. I am now taking 500mg of Azithromycin for the GI tract, and it is still having the GI tract symptoms I am experiencing. I am also taking Flagyl 400mg and I am now feeling much better.
I just wanted to add that I have read that Flagyl works for the gut as well as UTI. It is also the medication for GI tract and I am trying to get rid of this infection and taking the antibiotic again as this is the case. I am also on 500mg of Azithromycin to try and get rid of this infection and I am hoping to get rid of the GI tract symptoms.
Good Luck!
Thanks for all this information!
I know I am an idiot and should not be taking Flagyl. But I am sure my gut is suffering because of this. I am also taking Flagyl 400 mg and the GI tract symptoms are not getting better but I can’t find a dose for my GI tract. I do know that there is a good treatment option for my gut. However, I am concerned because it is not working for me and I am not sure about the dosage I would have been taking. I am also concerned because this is the first time I have tried Flagyl for UTI. I have been taking this medication for a week, but I have not had good results for the GI tract symptoms. I am now taking 500mg of Azithromycin and have been feeling much better. If anyone else has any thoughts on where to take this medication and how to get rid of the GI tract symptoms, I would love to hear from anyone who has been able to find a dose for the gut.
March 24, 2005, 12:22pmHi DrG,
Thanks for the quick response to your question. I’m in the same boat as you and I have been using Flagyl for the past year and a half. I don’t think that Flagyl works for my gut. I am not sure how it would work for your gut.
Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.
As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.
Flagyl is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. It contains the drug metronidazole, which is available in generic form. Flagyl is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

What is the recommended dose of Flagyl for treating bacterial infections?
The recommended dose of Flagyl for treating bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin is typically one capsule taken orally in a single course. However, it is important to complete the entire course of Flagyl as prescribed and to follow professional guidance as prescribed.
Flagyl is available in the form of a single capsule and is typically prescribed for a low-dose oral tablet. If Flagyl is being prescribed for both sex partners, both partners should take the tablet simultaneously. This will help reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner.
Flagyl is important to note that while metronidazole can be used to treat bacterial infections, it should not be used to treat viral infections like the common cold or flu. Instead, Flagyl should be used for viral infections in the genital area, especially if a genital infection is suspected.
